Description
My mother was amazed by us and our dogs. We would keep running after them and them after us for a long time until she would go like. “Hey, you boys and your dogs, are you on something? Do you ever just get tired like normal people?” I really loved that part, “like normal people”. She just decided that we and the dogs were all people. We seemed to connect with our dogs on another level.
Growing up in our village was a lot of fun. We treated our dogs like live toys. We would go out with them all the places we would go. To the market, to the forest, to the river, to the shamba and sometimes almost to bed; of course mum wouldn’t live with that. So our dogs always stayed outside the house. There was no debate about that. Father was with mum on this.
One of the trickiest times was when they would follow us to school. We would really have a hard time chasing them back home only for them to come following at a distance once again. They even followed us to church where they would wait hidden outside the church gate until we were done. They would hug and jump over us and soil our lovely Sunday best and make us look the way we look on Saturday. FILTHY!
If there is a friendship that can be that deep, I would like to really know it. Too bad, Jack, jimmy, chui, Soldier, Mark, John, Bega and Muruthi are long dead. I just cherish them here in my heart! Friends Forever! I have no Dogs these days. I just enjoy watching boys running around up and down with their dogs!
