Description
Taking the bull out or Taking out the bull? All of them sound like you are shooting the bull. Anyway here is the story about this particular bull.
This painting I did from memory. I can’t count the times I used to see my grandmother take out the bull. Not that she did not have other domestic animals like cows, goats, sheep and chicken, she did. The most striking to my young mind was the bull. I didn’t like that guy that much. We had no love lost. The only person he respected was grandmother. She used to talk to him like a person. “Hey, Ndegwa!” That was his name. “Be ready, I am taking you out to the field! You think you are tough, I am tougher!” She would then proceed to get the huge fella out to the field by the rope! I don’t know how she managed to deal with the mean guy. He was a menace to all other people. My grandfather could not even go near him.
This repeated morning exercise got stuck in my mind to this day. I was amazed by the sheer size of Ndegwa. I would watch him from a little opening on the house wall as he was taken out by the toughest woman in the whole world! He was a prized seeder in the whole village. (My grandmother was a business woman long before I did my first business class in primary school). Back to Ndegwa. All the young bulls and heifers in the village were his children. I have this weird feeling that his family tree has grown to this day in that village!
