Description
Adansonia is a genus made up of eight species of medium-to-large deciduous trees known as baobabs. Thers is Adansonia digitata, Adansonia grandidieri, Adansonia gregorii and Adansonia rubrostipa. They are placed in the Malvaceae family, subfamily Bombacoideae. They are native to Madagascar, mainland Africa, and Australia. The trees have also been introduced to other regions such as Asia.
The Baobab in my painting is Adansonia Digitata. This tree I have seen a thousand times in Kenya. This is the baobab Tree species I know. This is the baobab tree that I have touched countless times. Ironically, as recent as last year, someone had gotten a license to uproot several of these giants and replant them in a faraway country…. The license caused an uproar, it was revoked. I just hope it stays revoked into the future.
Baobab is a good source of many important vitamins and minerals. Research shows that the nutritional content of baobab can vary depending on the geographical location where it’s grown and between different parts of the plant, such as the leaves, pulp and seeds.
For instance, the pulp is high in vitamin C, antioxidants and several key minerals like potassium, magnesium, iron and zinc The leaves are rich in calcium and high-quality proteins that can be easily digested. Furthermore, the seeds and kernel of the plant are loaded with fiber, fat and micronutrients like thiamine, calcium and iron
However, in most parts of the world where fresh baobab is unavailable, it’s more commonly found as a dried powder. Powdered baobab contains many important nutrients but is especially high in vitamin C, vitamin B6, iron and potassium.
In my painting I normally love showing this giant when it has shed its leaves. During the leafy time it has another dramatic and awesome beauty, yet without leaves it is simply amazing too!!
These giants can grow from 5–25 metres (16–82 feet) tall. That is some serious size. They can also easily live for 2000 years! I stop there.
