Description
Some things seem strange when you are young. I remember a man who would not cut or allow anyone to cut his big indigenous trees. His name was Josiah. He used to herd a few animals and stayed in a thatched hut on his hilly farm.
We use to think he was very strange staying alone on the hill and all. We believed if we went too close to his hut he could most definitely eat us. 'The Hill Ogre' was the village tale.
Today, I look at his place and really feel sad. He died almost 30 years ago. Someone cut down his big trees for timber a long time ago. I remember the beauty! By preserving the place, he avoided the effect of soil erosion. I visited the place the other day and what I say was a disaster. The place was turned into a quarry and huge gullies gape at you like an alien landscape.
When I was young, the old men used to say if you cut the old traditional trees you will be cursed forever.
Now I know why they came up with that story. To protect the environment.
Surely, if we cut all our trees, do we really need someone else to call evil down upon us? The power of the curse is in our hands! Old man Josiah's place has a place in my memory forever!
