Description
Sweet Sweet Fanta Diallo is a Song by Alpha Blondy that reminds me of my Youth.
In all places there used to be a girl that was untouchable, the most beautiful girl in the village.
All young men used to think she was an Angel from some place heavenly.
As I grew in my village, this girl was the dream woman for all the young men of my village. Just meeting her in the village walkways made young men walk in a daze and into the bush as she passed. The stronger ones would stammer some incoherent greetings to her. Some of us would shout a hello in our heads and believe she heard and answered in our heads! She made us melt into jelly. She messed up with our developing hormones to no end.
Where did she go? Like the Sweet Fanta Diallo of the Alpha Blondy Song, she disappeared into some place. Her fame was gone in a moment. She was no longer there anymore. Where did she disappear to?
She used to be a rainbow, she used to be the sun of the village. People talked about her in their stories. People named some of their children after her, or may be after her name.
I never got to hear where she went. I never once got to know which school she went to after lower grade. I never got to hear who she got or didn't get married to. I never got to see her become a star in the world! From that moment when I started using my head straight, I discovered that it was the inner beauty that counted. It is the person inside that is the most precious.
All the not-so-famous women of our village have become forces to reckon with. Where was all that beauty? This is a story for another day.
Where did the famous Sweet Fantastic go? I haven’t heard about her for the last 30 or so years! No one seems to know where she went. Not even the people in the diaspora know where she went. They also keep asking me whether I see her these days.
Where is Sweet Fantastic? Did she go to the moon? Did she vanish into the stars? Did she get abducted by the aliens? Did she disappear into the sun?
A week ago someone, who always had his ears on the ground, told me where she went. I wish I didn’t keep asking. I got my answer. I couldn’t believe it! At 20 years only!! I just sat there looking into the sky, not the ground. I grabbed my art tools and gave her some memory. That was the best I could do! I will not disclose the details of what led to her demise; you’ll just want to kill the whole world if I did! RIP Sweet Fantastic!
Dedicated to all young women and men who die young because of this lying-cruel-mean World!
