Description
In most cases we draw using watercolor, acrylic, pastel, charcoal, oil color, pencil, and so forth.
I remember when growing up in Africa, we did not have much money to purchase paints.
In those days, your family would think about your food first, then shelter, School fees and books if possible. Something like paint would be bought if there was surplus. There was no room for such luxury in those days.
Due to such predicaments, we figured how to make paint from red earth dirt, beet-root (note, it is peels only not the tuber itself), green leaves and blue, yellow, red, purple, pink flowers. We got black from used oven charcoal to balance our work. White was the paper itself!
This didn't make us lesser artists later on when we could afford the trappings of fine art like the pros!
Today I pay homage to a style that came later (when I could afford a Biro Pen) in my life before graduating to the real art materials.
The use of a biro pen and a subtle pencil to draw. All in all, due to the hardships we went through while growing in our village, we learnt one thing; ART can be pretty cheap if you decide to use materials available to you.
