This painting was inspired by true events. Some time back, I was walking with my wife near a local park. Most of the time men will be found sitting in groups here waiting for a chance to get some manual work from people who might need a house painter, gardener, mechanic etc… They will not do anything else the whole day if they don’t get work. They will continually talk as they wait. They can do this for days while they get work or they don’t. I am not judging anyone because that could also be me.

Strangely, I have never seen women among them at any particular time. If you see one, she will be busy serving them with some tea, food or porridge. (for a fee of course, she is in business)

Any time you see women together like that even if they are waiting for work they will be busy doing something. They would be knitting a sweater or a basket as they talk. Or plaiting their hair.

I can see how it would go if women just sat at that park the whole day talking and doing nothing; All hell would break loose. People will go on like… “what are those women doing there just sitting?” …”Those lazy women”… “Don’t those women have something to do?”…. “What has the world come to, are those women sitting there idle?.... “ I can’t believe it, are those married women sitting around?... and so forth and so fifth.

One thing I will definitely say is that you will find men busy fixing a road with a sign saying MEN AT WORK. I think there should be one at this park saying MEN DOING NOTHING so that someone can see they need work to do, so that they can have a sign saying, MEN DOING SOMETHING.
