Description
The caribou is a specialist that is well adapted to cooler climates, with hollow-hair fur that covers almost all of its body including its nose, and provides insulation in winter and flotation for swimming. Young caribou can already outrun an Olympic sprinter when only a day old.
When it comes to reindeer, the different seasons will call for different feeding diet. In spring, they will need green grass and vegetation. During the end of summer and early fall, they will eat shrubs that are dry and maturing, along with lichens, mushrooms and herbs. In the later part of the fall, they will have cured and dried leaves as well as shrub leaves, lichen, sedges, dried grass and herbs. In winter, lichens make up the bulk of the diet.
A caribou calf can walk about one hour after it is born. It follows its mother, staying close to nurse and for protection. Caribou live in big groups called a herd. In the spring, herds come together and form an even bigger group of up to 500 animals. Since all the females in a herd give birth at the same time of year, a reindeer calf has many friends to play caribou games with!
