Description
This fellow is not your ordinary Elephant. This guy has a story. He will live in our memory among the famous African elephants with really large tusks. (the one with the largest tusks was Ahmed who is long dead). This particular guy in this painting was named after an earlier large tusked elephant named Satao before him. He (is) was Satao II.
Too bad because he was killed in January 2014 by poachers. The only good news in this story is that the ivory was still intact when he was discovered. The poachers did not get a chance to remove the huge tusks! His tusks were not traded in the world market. Even better, the poachers were arrested!
This boy was about 50 years of age when he died. I thought a painting of him in my elephant collection would do him a great honor.
Next time you wear that ivory necklace or see that ivory artifact in your house, even if the ivory was legally acquired, Remember SATAO II.

Elephants are such fascinating animals and it is so sad to hear the story of this one. You do a great job of honoring such an awesome animal, Anthony. LF
